OBITUARY: Earnest Eugene "Gene" Emerson
Earnest Eugene "Gene" Emerson, 81, Mayetta, died Wed., Sept. 14, 2011, at his home. He was born July 24, 1930, at Rumbar, MO, the son of William B. and Elsie (Anderson) Emerson. Gene was self-employed in the construction business. He coached a baseball team in Newton and coached girls softball at Shawnee Lake for many years. Gene was married to Bonnie Lee Berger on June 3, 1956, at Newton. He was preceded in death by a daughter, MSgt. Susan Emerson, on Sept. 4, 2010, and a son-in-law, Keith Comfort, on Sept. 30, 2008. Surviving are his wife: Bonnie L. Emerson of the home: 4 daughters: Melody Chambers (Dan) of Mayetta, Penny Emerson of Wichita, Terri Comfort of Mayetta, and Donna May (Joe) of Mayetta; a son: Carl Emerson of Mayetta; 3 brothers: Ken Emerson of Mayetta, Harley Emerson and Samuel Emerson both of Topeka; 7 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM, Mon., Sept. 19, 2011, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka. Gene will lie in state after 12:00 Noon, Sunday, at the funeral chapel where the family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 PM.
