OBITUARY: Dr. V. A. Spinharney
Dr. V.A. Spinharney, 87, Valley Falls, died Fri., Aug. 18, 2006, at St. Francis Hospital, Topeka. He was born in Dubuque, IA, on Nov. 10, 1918, the son of Dr. F.J. Spinharney and Mary Hopkins Spinharney.
He was married to Jeanne Goodwin on Jan. 26, 1948, in Kansas City, KS. She passed away June 12, 1996, in Topeka, KS. They had lived in Russell and Topeka before moving to Valley Falls in 1967.
Dr. Spinharney attended Fort Dodge, IA, Community College. He graduated from Cleveland Chiropractic College in 1941, and after military service attended Logan Chiropractic College in St. Louis, MO. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1942. He served in the 5th and 2nd Infantry Divisions, including the D-Day Landings on Omaha Beach in France. He received a meritorius unit award for difficult tasks. He was a member of St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Church in Valley Falls and a 50 year member of the Knights of Columbus. He belonged to Moose Lodge # 555 in Topeka, and Grahem-Herbers Post # 3084, V.F.W., in Valley Falls. He was a former member and past president of the Valley Falls Rotary Club. He was a former member of the Elks Lodge in Topeka, Toastmasters, and Optimist clubs. He was a past president of Shawnee-Douglas Chiropractic Assoc. and a member of Kansas Chiropractic Assoc. and American Chiropractic Assoc.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law: Carole A. and Orion Jordan of Topeka; a sister, Catherine LeClair, of Charlotte, VA; and a grandson, Bruce, of Lawrence.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Mon., Aug. 21, 2006, at St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Church, Valley Falls. Grahem-Herbers Post # 3084, V.F.W. will conduct military honors at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Valley Falls. Dr. Spinharney will lie in state after 4:00 p.m. Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 N.W. Independence, Topeka where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m., Monday at the church with a Rosary to be prayed at 9:30 a.m.
