Dr. Larryeugene Harris

Larry Eugene Harris, O.D., 71, Topeka, died Tues., July 12, 2011, at Midland Hospice House, Topeka.

Dr. Harris was born July 13, 1939, in Chanute, the son of Paul and Velma (Anderson) Harris. He attended Kansas University (1957-58), Neosho County Community College (1958-59), and graduated from Illinois College of Optometry (Doctor of Optometry, 1962). Dr. Harris entered the U.S. Army as an optometry officer in 1962 and was honorably discharged as a Captain in 1967.

He established an optometric practice in Topeka in March, 1968, and a second office in Valley Falls in Sept., 1969. He continued to be an active member of the Kansas Optometric Association where he served on the board of directors 1978-84, and was chairman of the Kansas Optometric Association's Legislative Committee 1982-87. He was voted KOA Optometrist of the year in 1986.

Dr. Harris was an active member of First United Methodist Church where he sang in the Sanctuary Choir as long as his health permitted. He had served on the church's official board and was chairman of the administrative board from 1991 to 1993. He was a large supporter and volunteer of the Sunflower Music Festival. Dr. Harris retired from his private practice in April, 2010.

Dr. Harris was married to Carol A. Kratina on May 10, 1969. They later divorced, but remained life-long friends. Surviving are their three children: Donna Ticknor, M.D. (Steve) of Bowie, MD, Amy Miller (Will) of Topeka, and Daniel Harris (Mary Douglas) of Topeka; siblings: JoAnn Brinkmeyer (Baird) of Oklahoma, and James Harris (Gana) of Missouri; 2 granddaughters: Sabyne and Katia Ticknor; and Ethel, the Wonder Dog. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Doyle "Dean" Harris.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 PM, Sun., July 24, 2011, at First United Methodist Church. Private entombment of cremains will be at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery Columbarium.
