OBITUARY: John Martin Edmund, Jr., DDS
John Martin Edmund, Jr., DDS, was born in Beatrice, NE, on July 25, 1918. He was born at his maternal grandparents' home. He was delivered by F. Arlinton Brough, DO (father of the movie star, Robert Taylor).
He began his journey to heaven on Jan. 8, 2007, leaving behind his wife, Elizabeth, of 63 years; three daughters: Sheri Edmund Harvey (Fred) of Sparks, NV, Kimberly Edmund O'Brien (Kevin) of Cheney, KS and Lisa Edmund Jackson (John) of Austin, TX; and seven grandchildren: Sarah and DeAdre Harvey, Erica, Kathryn and Will Jackson, and Patrick and Shane O'Brien; one sister: Evleen (Bruce) Avery of Bremerton, WA; and numerous nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. John M. and Marguerite Edmund; and a sister, Phyllis Ruth (Aubrey) Reeves.
He lead a very active life. He was a life Scout and a past Boy Scout District Committeeman. He was a member of the DeMolay, played clarinet and sang in the church choir in Fairbury, NB, where he graduated from FHS in 1936. He graduated from William Jewell College in 1940 with a BA in Sociology. He was a life member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.
He served in WW II with the 486th Amphibian Group, Transportation Corps, Guadalcanal/Solomon Islands. He was one of the orginial founding officers of the Transportation Corps. He married Elizabeth Ann George in Marceline, MO, on Nov. 21, 1943, in route to the South Pacific. After his return from WW II he attended the Univeristy of Missouri - Kansas City Dental School. He graduated in 1952. He entered private practice in Hays, KS, in Nov., 1952, and left practice in Nov., 1980.
While in Hays, he belonged to the First Baptist Church, Civil Defense Director of Ellis County (66-74), Deputy Sheriff of Ellis County, MU Alumni Assoc., Hays Masonic Lodge, Hays York Rite Bodies, O.E.S. (Past Patron); Hays Rotary Club (President 63-64 and director 63-65); Isis Shrine Temple of Salina; Golden Belt Dental Society (Past-President); Oil Belt Dental Study Club (Past President); Charter Member of Smokey Hill Country Club; American Dental Assoc.; KS State Dental Assoc. (various committees); Alpha Phi Omega; Delta Sigma Delta; and Pierre Fauchard Academy. He had staff privileges at St. Anthony Hospital (52-81) and Hadley Memorial Hospital (53-81). He served on the FHSU School of Nursing Faculty (52-62). He moved to Topeka in 1982. He was an active member in First United Methodist Church; Topeka Rotary Club; Washburn Walkers, Military Officers Assoc., Orient Lodge # 51, AF & AM; Topeka York Rite Bodies; Arab Shrine Temple; and Beulah Chapter # 34, O.E.S. He was a V.A. Volunteer. He retired as a Colonel from the USAR in the Dental Corps. He was listed in Who's Who.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM, Thurs., Jan. 11, 2007, in Klasse Chapel of First United Methodist Church followed by military honors conducted by a Fort Riley U.S. Army Detail. Cremation will follow.
Dr. Edmund will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Wed., at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, Topeka, where Masonic Services will be conducted at 6:00 PM, Wed., by Orient Lodge # 51, AF & AM and the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 PM.
