Dr. Emory A. Groves, 94, of Topeka, passed away Friday, June 24, 2011.
He was born April 9, 1917 in Lyon County, KS, the son of Gilbert E. Groves and Ida Elizabeth Patton. He graduated from Harveyville High School in 1934. He began his teaching career at Rural Elementary District No. 7 in Wabaunsee County in 1936. After completing his degree from Kansas State University in 1941, he taught vocational agriculture in the Scandia, Wamego, Belleville and Emporia High Schools. He also sponsored FFA in Emporia. He received advanced degrees from Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia. He received his Doctorate of Education from the University of Arkansas. He also spent a tour of duty in the European Theatre of Operation during WW II. He retired from Washburn University in 1982 as Professor of Secondary and Graduate Education after 21 years.
Dr. Groves was a member of Lowman United Methodist Church, Topeka. He was a member of numerous education and service organizations and Masonic Lodge and the American Legion.
He married S. Ferne Burks on August 22, 1940 in Council Grove, KS. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Karen Gazaway of Muskogee, OK and Konnie Myers of Topeka; a son, Gary Groves of Topeka; five grandchildren, Matt Groves, Jeff Groves, Emily Groves, Chris Gazaway and Kim Yardley; five great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; a brother, Darrell Groves of Holton, KS and a sister Dixie Burgess of Kansas City, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Quentin Groves, a sister, Maxine Fisher and his step-mother, Doris Groves.
Honoring his request, Dr. Groves was cremated. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m., Monday, June 27, 2011 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka. A memorial ceremony will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at the Lowman United Methodist Church, 4000 SW Drury Lane, Topeka, KS 66604. Military honors will be conducted by Ft. Riley Funeral Detail. Memorial contributions may be made to Lowman United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
