Dorothy "Jean" Brooks, 84, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, November 11, 2012 at Lexington Park Nursing Home in Topeka.
She was born March 30, 1928 in Chanute, KS, the daughter of Scott and Turrah (Bower) Neptune. She attended Chanute High School. She obtained her GED in the 1980's.
Mrs. Brooks was an active member of the North Topeka Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher for 25 years, was the church clerk for 12 years and was active in Macedonian and Lay Witness Ministries. She read the Bible completely through each year for 18 years.
Dorothy married Melvin Roy "Bud" Brooks on October 21, 1944 in Chanute, KS. He preceded her in death on August 28, 2010. Survivors include two daughters, Sandy Howard (Bob) and Melva Jean Mize (Charlie), all of Topeka; 8 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Jeffrey Scott Brooks, December 15, 1996 a great-grandson, Samuel Roy Mize on September 26, 2003 and five siblings.
A funeral ceremony will be 10 a.m., Thursday, November 15, 2012 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, KS 66608. Interment will follow at Rochester Cemetery, Topeka. Dorothy will lie in state after 3 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to North Topeka Baptist Church, 123 NW Gordon, Topeka, KS 66608-1314 or Grace Hospice, 3715 SW 29th St., Ste. 100, Topeka, KS 66614.
