Donald Willis Pierce, 76, of Silver Lake, passed away Thursday, January 7, 2010 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka, KS.
He was born May 25, 1933 in Kensington, KS, the son of Willis and Cleo (Pyle) Pierce.
He attended Kensington High School, and graduated in 1956 from Washburn University. He earned a masters degree in 1965 from the University of Kansas School of Administration. He served in the United States Air Force as a KC-97 Pilot in the Strategic Air Command, 305th Bomber Wing in Tampa, FL. He was honorably discharged as a Captain. He taught at Phillipsburg Middle School, Perry High School, Northern Hills Jr. High and Seaman High School. He also served as a basketball and football coach. He taught business and physical education. He was the first principal at Logan Junior High and later served as principal of Seaman High School for 21 years. He retired in 1995 and the Seaman school district named the football field in his honor. Don was an educator for 36 years.
He was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, Sunrise Optimist Club, Kansas and National Association of Secondary School Principals, Phi Alpha Delta Fraternity, Kensington Masonic Lodge #425, and the American Legion Post No. 0166. He was inducted in 1995 to the Kansas Teacher's Hall of Fame.
Donald married Jo Ann Davenport on May 26, 1957 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include his children, Kyle Pierce (Mary), Blake Pierce (Sally) and Susan Wells (Bruce); four grandchildren, Cody, Cheyenne, Morgan, and Mallary Pierce, all of Topeka. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Kenny Pierce.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, KS 66608. Cremation will follow the service. Mr. Pierce will lie in state after 3 p.m., Monday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Graveside inurnment services will be at Olive Branch Cemetery, Kensington, KS at a later date.
