Donald "Jack" Gleason

Donald "Jack" Gleason, 90, Topeka, died Thursday, May 28, 2015, at Saint Francis Hospital, Topeka. He was born October 6, 1924, in Topeka, the son of Robert Henry and Dorothy (Cox) Gleason.

He attended Quinton Heights Grade School, Crane Junior High School and Topeka High School; he graduated from Auburn High School.

Jack enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the U.S. Navy Armed Guard from June 1943, until November 1945, serving in the Pacific and Atlantic Theaters of War.

He worked in the Santa Fe Railway Shops, the Supply Depot and for the Topeka Fire Department from November 1, 1947, until he retired as Battalion Chief on December 21, 1979.

Jack married Henrietta May at Hope Lutheran Church in Topeka on May 18, 1958. She preceded him in death on December 7, 2012.

He was a member of the U.S. Navy Armed Guard WWII, Santa Fe Old Timers Retirees Club, City of Topeka Retirees Club, National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees, American and Northeast Kansas Chapters of the Historical Society of Germans from Russia, Kansas State Historical Society, Shawnee County Historical Society, Topeka Coin Club, Kansas Numismatic Organization, Moose Lodge # 555, VFW Post # 1650, American Legion Post # 1, Firefighters Local # 83, and Orient Lodge # 51, AF & AM.

Surviving are a sister-in-law: Esther May of Topeka; cousins: Ellen Tichenor of Topeka and Richard Shimeall of Magnolia, TX; good friends: Mildred Hornbeck and Harvey Chebo both of Topeka; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka, followed by Masonic Services conducted by Orient Lodge # 51, AF & AM. The Topeka Fire Department and U.S. Navy will conduct honors at Mount Hope Cemetery, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka.

Jack will lie in state after 3:00 PM Monday at the funeral chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Helping Hands Humane Society, 5720 SW 21st Street, Topeka, KS 66604-3720.
