Donald E. Kiehl

Donald E. Kiehl, 80, of Topeka/Willard, passed away Fri., July 1st, 2011, at Colmery-O'Neil VAMC in Topeka after being ill for several years.

He was born on Sept. 18, 1930, in Muscotah, the son of Fredrick John and Mildred Anna (Bushey) Kiehl. The youngest of 4 children, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Charles. His sister Betty Bales, Holton, recently celebrated her 90th birthday.

He grew up on the family farm in Muscotah, graduated from Atchison County Community High School in Effingham in 1948, and joined the U.S. Air Force in June, 1948.

On Sept. 17, 1950, he married his high school sweetheart, Roberta Ann Valentine, in Effingham. She survives and resides at Homestead Assisted Living, Topeka.

They have two daughters, Beverly Kiehl and husband, John Pendergrass, Joplin, MO, and Ann and husband, Dennis Keller, Rossville; two grandchildren, Jason Keller and wife, Stephanie, Tecumseh, and their sons, Miles and Beckett, and Amy Keller, Chicago; two step-grandsons, Matthew Pendergrass, Pittsburg and Michael Pendergrass and wife, Emily, and daughter, Bailey, and son, Isaac, Cabot, AR.

Don was in product development for General Motors in Kansas City, and co-owned McAbee Body Shop for many years before he became co-owner of A-1 Auto Salvage. He retired from Allied Insurance Co. after 15 years as an auto claims adjuster. He worked part time for Topeka Auto Auction and Briggs Automotive.

Tecumseh was home to Don and Roberta for 43 years before moving to the Willard area. During that time he was a member of the Tecumseh United Methodist church, served on the water district board, and was involved in Decker 4-H Club and the Shawnee County 4-H Horse Club.

Don enjoyed animals, competing in sulky pony races, trout fishing, tinkering, and monthly breakfast with his buddies. His neighbors knew him as a good resource for borrowing equipment or helping with a project. He was known for his humor and friendly smile.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 PM, Wed., July 6, 2011, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka. The family will receive friends after the service at Penwell-Gabel Family Center, 1940 NW Central Ave., Topeka.
