Denzil Dewayne Hackathorn, 78, of Lecompton, passed away Friday, October 23, 2015.
He was born August 3, 1937, in Kansas City, KS, the son of Kenneth and Martha Durcy Jane (Stroud) Hackathorn. He graduated from Perry High School in 1955. Denzil worked for forty-five years at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Manufacturing and retired on February 1, 2001.
Denzil married Marlene Elizabeth James on January 5, 1957 in Glassport, PA.
Survivors include his wife, Marlene Elizabeth Hackathorn, daughter, Marlene Cheryl Jolly (David), sons, John Dewayne Hackathorn (Susie) and Denzil Lynn Hackathorn (Kathy), sister, Evalee Manis, brother, Kenneth Hackathorn (Jean), 7 grandchildren, Joshua Hackathorn, Aimee Cook, Tanya Hackathorn, Jason Jolly, Brian Jolly, Samantha Alexander, Alex Hackathorn, 10 great-grandchildren, Hunter Hackathorn, Wyatt Hackathorn, Dalton Hackathorn, Gracyn Cook, Arabella Bradshaw, Braxton Jolly, Kynleigh Jolly, Adym Jolly, Sophia Alexander, and one great-grandchild on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Darlinda, one sister, Minnie Bell Palmer, and one great-granddaughter, Brileigh Jess Jolly.
Mr. Hackathorn was a member of the American Legion of Perry. He rode rodeo for many years and was proud to ride for two years for American Royal. He served as Fire Chief at Goodyear Tire and Rubber and Fire Chief of the Lecompton Volunteer Fire Department. He was one of several gentleman that helped found the Lecompton Ball Association, he coached baseball and softball for many teams and assistant coach for Perry American Legion baseball. He loved going to all of his children and grandchildren's various sporting activities and he loved hunting, fishing and traveling. He loved spending time in the hayfields and with his horses and enjoyed the time he spent getting together with family.
Denzil will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 30 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave. in Topeka where the family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
A funeral ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 31 at the Perry American Legion, 410 Perry Place, Perry, KS. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Lecompton, KS.
