Deanna Sue Hays, age 78, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at her home in Topeka. Deanna was born May 13, 1943 in Lyndon, Kansas, the daughter of Charles and Leah (Odor) Phelon. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1961. She married Henry Hays, Jr. in 1963. They later divorced, but remained close friends. She graduated from Washburn University and later Kansas State University with a degree in Medical Technology. She worked as a Medical Technologist at the Lindsborg Hospital and later at the McPherson Hospital. Deanna lived at Westport Square where she served on the HOA. She enjoyed attending her children’s and grandchildren’s events when they were younger. She enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge. Deanna enjoyed singing and was active with a choir from Bethany College where she sang with the performance of Handel’s Messiah for many years.
Deanna was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Phelon, and a sister, Audra McPeak. She is survived by a son, Stan (Amy) Hays of Pleasant Hill, MO; two daughters, Jennifer (Steven Woods) Hays of Bellingham, WA and Heather (Manuel) Cabral of Gardner, KS; a sister, Rita Melton of Topeka; and five grandchildren, William Woods, Nathan Hays, Marissa Cabral, Hope Cabral and Anna Hays. Even after her divorce from Henry, Deanna remained close to his mother, Virginia Hays. The two spent a lot of time together for many years.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 16, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home. The family will greet friends one hour before services, also at the funeral home. Services will be live-streamed at the Davidson Funeral Home & Cremation Services Facebook page. Interment will be at the Highland Cemetery, Scranton, KS.
