OBITUARY: Dean Clifford Melvin
Dean Clifford Melvin, 81, Topeka, died Sun., Jan. 24, 2010, at his home. He was born May 19, 1928, at Topeka the son of Glen and Manila (Stock) Melvin. He graduated from Seaman High School and played basketball and football at Washburn College. Dean had served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of Topeka North Post # 400 of the American Legion. He worked at Kansas Automotive and had been a partner in auto parts stores in St. Marys and Valley Falls. Some of his favorite memories were at his cabin at Council Grove Lake – as all his friends would know he "never had a bad one." He was an avid sports fan. Dean was married to Martha M. Miller on Oct. 8, 1949 in Topeka. He was preceded in death by a son, Fred Dean Melvin, in 1980. Surviving are his wife: Martha M. Melvin of the home; a daughter: Jodi Parker (Jeff) of Olathe; a son: Tom Melvin of Topeka; a brother: Duane Melvin of Topeka; 5 grandchildren: Lacey Turpin (Mitch), Cooper Melvin, Jessica Baumgarten (Will), Kelly Parker, and Brett Parker; and 2 great-grandchildren: Ethan and Cael Baumgarten. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM, Thurs., Jan. 28, 2010, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, Topeka. Interment in Rochester Cemetery.
