OBITUARY: David Walter Powell, Jr.
David Walter Powell, Jr., 88, Topeka, KS, died Tues., Aug. 21, 2012, at St. Francis Hospital, Topeka. He was born May 20, 1924, in Texarkana, TX, the son of Elizabeth E. (Line) and David W. Powell, Sr. David lived in Marietta, GA and Little Rock, AR, before moving to Topeka in 1962. He served in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam, retiring from the U.S. Air Force (55th Strategic Air Command) in 1962 as a Master Sergeant. David was a member of the Air Force Sergeants' Assoc., V.F.W., American Legion, Am. Assoc. of Retired Persons, Border Lodge # 672, AF & AM of Texarkana, TX, Scottish Rite (Arkansas and Topeka), Arab Shrine, Arab Shrine Legion of Honor, and a 60 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star (Topeka Chapter # 462, OES and Loyal Chapter # 176, OES). He was married to Frances Landrum on Aug. 8, 1949, in Linden, TX. They were divorced. He was married to Leona M. Provo on March 6, 1965, in Topeka. She preceded him in death on Feb. 13, 2010. Surviving are a daughter: Elizabeth E. Sehlke (Donald) of Houston, TX; a step-son: Robert J. Provo (Linda) of Scranton; grandchildren: Trisha Fonseca (Adrian) and Shannon Sehlke (Crystal); great-grandchildren: Chelsea Fonseca and Jacob Fonseca; step-grandchildren: Tina R. Gannaway (William), Mark L. Provo (Kristy) and Marty L. Provo; and step-great-grandchildren: Maria Provo, Anna Provo, Curtis Gannaway, Connor Gannaway, Fostor Provo, Archer Provo, Cameron Provo, and Alec Provo. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Sat., Aug. 25, 2012, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka followed Rose Croix Services conducted by Topeka Scottish Rite Bodies A Whiteman Air Force Base Honor Guard will conduct military honors at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 3616 SW Sixth Ave., Topeka.
