David Edgar Perkins, 80, of Topeka, KS passed from this life to his Heavenly reward on Wednesday, June 2, 2021.
David was born on December 4, 1940, in Topeka, KS to Malcolm and Dora Perkins. He is the second born of four boys. During his high school years, he was the starting quarterback of the football team. He graduated from Seaman High School in 1958. He served in the US Navy aboard the USS Gallant from 1958-1961.
He married his high school sweetheart, Virginia DeHart and celebrated 63 years in April 2021. They raised four children - Scott (Diane) Perkins, Tammy (Travis) Tyler, Darla (Steve) Mitchell, Michael (Janis) Perkins; 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
He is the former Fire Chief of Soldier Township. During his time as Chief, he had the foresight to get a bond election to move the fire station from North Topeka Blvd next to the Pepsi plant to its current location on 46th street. Throughout his tenure, he was able to upgrade the vehicles, equipment and stay on top of new procedures. This position was his dream job and he excelled at it. He also worked as a Shawnee County sheriff deputy and at Goodyear prior to the fire department. He retired from the Topeka Public Library where he was a mechanic.
A memorial service will be held at Parker Price Funeral Home at 11 a.m. on June 18. In lieu of flowers, you are asked to donate to the American Heart Association or Alzheimer's Association.
