David O. Manley, D.V.M.
David Oscar Manley died Sunday, June 27, 2004 at Aldersgate Village in Topeka, KS. He was born June 15, 1916 at Wakarusa, Kansas, the son of Joseph I. and Edith Manley. He grew up on the family farm near Wakarusa in Shawnee County. He attended Pleasant Valley grade school and Auburn High School near his home. He attended Kansas State University at Manhattan, Kansas and graduated in 1941 with the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He was married to Genevieve Bullock on June 15, 1941.
Doctor Manley spent four years in private practice of Veterinary Medicine at Norton, Kansas and thirty years with the U.S. Department of Agriculture doing work on livestock disease eradication and control. Early in his career with U.S.D.A., he spent two plus years in the Republic of Mexico assisting with the eradication of Foot and Mouth Disease in that republic in order to block the spread of the disease into the United States. Dr. Manley also held field assignments in Kansas, Wyoming, and North Dakota. From 1950 to 1973, he was Federal Veterinarian in Charge of Animal disease and eradication activities in Kansas with the headquarters located in Topeka, KS. His last assignment until his retirement was Area Veterinarian in Charge for Colorado, Wyoming and Utah with headquarters in Denver. After retiring, Dr. and Mrs. Manley returned to Topeka and in recent years have resided at Aldersgate Village.
Dr. Manley was a member of the Crestview United Methodist Church in Topeka. The National Association of Federal Veterinarians, a life member of the Kansas Veterianary Medical Association, a past member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and past member of the U.S. Animal Health Association. Dr. Manley loved music and was a member of Kansas Old Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers, and member of Rice Senior Citizen Club No. 2. He enjoyed playing guitar with others at nursing homes, retirement homes and Senior Citizens clubs. Other hobbies include water sports, hunting and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Genevieve, who continues to reside at Aldersgate Village; two daughters and their husbands, Bob and Betty Jo Stiles of Meriden, KS; Dean and Carol Leigh Kaufman of Topeka, KS; three sons and their wives, David Edward and Mary Manley of Topeka, KS; Dr. John H. and Xandra Manley of Bartlesville, OK and James Ivan and Nancy Manley of Wisconsin Rapids, WI. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren: Jason Manley, and Jennifer Brooks, of Topeka, KS; Dr. John A. Manley of Ashville, N.C.; Dr. Joel A. Manley and Andrea Faith Turner of Bartlesville, OK; Ken Stiles of Valley Falls, KS and Callie Stiles of Kansas City, KS; Erin Manley, Jessica Strong and Tara Manley of Minneapolis, MN; Erica, David and Ryan Kaufman of Topeka, KS and 13 Great Grandchildren.
Mr. Manley was cremated Memorial services will be held at Crestview United Methodist Church in Topeka, at 1:00 pm Thursday, July 1, 2004 with interment following immediately at Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery in Topeka, KS.
