CSM David E. Fox, 75, of Ozawkie, passed away Friday, November 7, 2014.
He was born April 15, 1939 in Hamilton, Ohio, the son of Rev. Charles Kenneth and Frances Mae (Miller) Fox. He was a 1957 graduate of Topeka High School and Washburn University in 1961 and also El Paso Community College, El Paso, TX, in 1984.
He enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard on July 24, 1956. He was nominated and appointed Command Sergeant Major of the Army National Guard of the United States and assigned as Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chief, National Guard Bureau, The Pentagon, Washington D.C. He was the first Kansan to be appointed to that position. He retired January 23, 1990. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 225 of Ozawkie.
Mr. Fox retired as Director of Transportation of Seaman School District 345 and later a Bus Driver for Jefferson West School District 340, retiring in 2013.
David married Kay Searcy on November 23, 1961 in Topeka. To this union, two children were born, Kimberly and Kelli. They later divorced. He married Janet R. Covert on October 5, 1984 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include four children, Kimberly (Curt) Bierbaum, Spring Hill, KS, Kelli (Rob) Jordan, Lee's Summit, MO, Brenda Covert, Topeka and Alan (Shannon) Covert, Matfield Green, KS; five grandchildren, Sean Schumacher, Tyler (Ashley) Jordan, Kenzi (Jon) Quigg, Brooke Neiberger and Cameron Jordan; a brother, Thomas Fox, Memphis, TN; and his canine companion, Kali Ray.
He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Krysten Schumacher and three brothers, James, Kenneth and Roger Fox.
David enjoyed fishing with his brothers, Dirt Track Racing, KU Basketball, attending Jeff West sporting events and RVing. He was also a member of the Good Sams Camping Club.
A funeral ceremony will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, KS 66608. The family requests those attending the service to dress casual. Interment with military honors will follow at the Prairie Home Cemetery, Topeka.
David will lie in state after 3 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m.
