Clifford Junior Everitt, 93, passed from this life into his Saviors arms on March 3, 2014 in Topeka, KS.
He was born March 4, 1920 to Robert Clifford Everitt and Ida Mae (James) Everitt in Pittsburg, Kansas. He attended school in Girard, Kansas, graduating in 1937. After graduation, he worked in a Civilian Conservation Corps camp building Farlington Lake in Crawford County. He moved to Baltimore, MD to begin a 36 year career with the Social Security Administration, working in offices in Kansas City, MO, Chillicothe, MO, Springfield, MO, Independence, KS, Hutchinson, KS, and Joplin, MO, retiring January 1, 1976.
On June 25, 1942, he took the oath to join the Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet, and in January, 1943 began his pre-flight training graduating with his pilot wings as a 2nd Lieutenant November 3, 1943. He was selected to be a twin engine pilot instructor, and served in that capacity for a year at Ellington Field, Texas. He arrived in Europe November 10, 1944, flying the C-47 in the 304th Troop Carrier Squadron, 442nd Troop Carrier Group. Lt Everitt hauled gasoline for General Patton's advance, and during the Assault on the Rhine, in addition to carrying paratroops, he towed troop gliders in the campaign. Upon Victory in Europe May, 1945, he was retained in theater, flying all over Europe during the occupation, returning home in April, 1946. He stayed in the reserve, advancing in rank, serving as a pilot instructor in the 442nd. He was called up during the Korean conflict, and stationed at San Marcos AFB, as a pilot instructor teaching Army aviators to fly the L5 small observation aircraft for artillery spotting. Capt Everitt left the Air Force Reserve August 4, 1955.
Clifford married Nadine Hughes of Mulberry, KS on April 5, 1941. She preceded him in death April 3, 1995. He is also preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Wanda Mitchell; a son, James Bryon Everitt, and another son who died shortly after birth. Clifford is survived by his daughter, Cyndie (Steve) Rexer, Topeka; grandson Chris (Christina) Rexer, Friend, NE; granddaughters Stacey (Nick) Kemper, Topeka; and Melissa (Jason) Vinsonhaler, Wamego; nine great grandchildren, a brother James C. (Deanna) Everitt, Grove, OK, 5 cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Clifford was an avid golfer and enjoyed camping in his travel trailer. His favorite food was pie but he only liked two kinds – hot and cold. He was a member of the Lions, Military Officers Association of America, Kaw Valley Chapter, and a volunteer at the Combat Air Museum. He was a former member of Second Presbyterian Church, Topeka and a current member of Central Park Christian Church, Topeka.
A graveside service will be at Noon, Friday, March 7, 2014 at the Pittsburg Garden of Memories, Pittsburg, KS. Clifford will lie in state after 3 p.m., Thursday at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, KS where the family will receive friends from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Please do not send flowers or plants.
