Clifford Saile
Clifford J. Saile, 79, Topeka, died Friday, April 18, 2003, at a Topeka hospice house.
Mr. Saile was a mechanic for Martin Tractor Co. for 34 years. He retired in 1985. He served as a radar operator in the Army during World War II. He was decorated with the American theater ribbon, Good Conduct medal and World War II Victory medal.
He was born Aug. 14, 1923, in Lawrence, to Joseph Henry and Fanny Rachel Reusch Saile. He graduated from Vineland High School.
Mr. Saile was a member of Topeka North Post No. 400 of the American Legion and Old Time Pickers and Fiddlers Association. He was an accomplished guitarist and played in several country western bands. He restored Model T cars and trucks and built a half-scale Allis Chalmers 1937 WEC tractor and plow that remained in full working order.
He married Rowena M. Potter on May 8, 1944, in Topeka. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Stacy Jones, Topeka; a son, David J. Saile, Topeka; four brothers, Jack F. Saile, and Bobby R. Saile, both of Baldwin City, Darrell Saile, Lawrence, and Billy J. Saile, Pomona; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Parker-Price Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Gardens. Mr. Saile will lie in state at the mortuary after 3 p.m. Tuesday, where visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m.
