Charles W. "Charlie" Coon, 79, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, September 16, 2012 at his home surrounded by the loving presence of his family.
He was born June 10, 1933 in Topeka, the son of George and Bertha M. (Fritz) Coon. He grew up in Topeka and attended Parkdale and East Topeka Junior High Schools.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in1951, during the Korean War, serving two years in Washington D.C. in the Honor Guard and serving two years in Germany and honorably discharged in 1955.
Mr. Coon worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company from 1955 until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of United Steel Workers Union No. 307, a 35 year member of the American Legion Post No. 400, and a Life-Member of Post No. 1650 of V.F.W.
Charles married Bettie E. Roberts on October 9, 1955 in Topeka. She preceded him in death in 2005. Survivors include a companion, Beverly G. Thompson, Topeka; three sons, Larry (Leota) Coon, Grantville, Garry Coon, Sandy, UT, and James (Sharron) Coon, Plano, TX and a daughter, Patricia (Marlin) Wiltz, Silver Lake; 4 grandchildren, Brandi (Travis) Platt, Kristi Lalley, Ashley (Tag) Templin and Austin Coon; 5 step-grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren, Dawson and Daylee Platt, Drake Lalley and Porter Templin; and two sisters, Delorise Lister, Topeka and Helen (Marlin) Lang, Torrance, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Jason McNaughton, and 8 sisters.
A funeral ceremony will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, KS 66608. Interment with military honors will follow at the Topeka Cemetery. Charles will lie in state after 3 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice Care of Kansas, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66604 or to Grace Baptist Church, 1110 NE Michigan, Topeka, KS 66616.
