OBITUARY: Charles L. Mattox, Jr.

Charles L. Mattox, Jr., 50, Topeka, passed away on Tues., Oct. 7, 2008, in his home, after a long, courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by the people whom he loved. He was born on March 18, 1958, the son of Charles L. and Patricia J. (Richeson) Mattox, Sr. Charles attended Topeka public schools and was a floorlayer for many years, however one of the jobs he enjoyed the most was as an Environmental Specialist at Heritage Village Nursing Home in Eskridge, where he was a favorite with the residents and staff alike. Junior, Bug, or Boone, as he was also known, was very passionate about fishing, rain or shine, and looked forward to annual trips to Montauk State Park in Missouri, he also enjoyed hunting, was a collector of angels, and was a diehard KU and Chiefs fan. Charles provided all that knew him with a lifetime of memories, his courage and strength touched all that knew him, and he will be greatly missed by all. Survivors include four children, Lacey N. Mattox of Topeka, Amanda K. Mattox Crouse of Silver Lake, Lisa M. Targett of Topeka, and Matthew W. Mattox of Kansas City; his mother: Patricia of Topeka; two brothers: John E. Mattox and his wife, Debbie, of Topeka and Alan D. Mattox and his wife, Wanda, of Tecumseh; a sister: Janet K. Mattox Martin and her husband, Bob, of Mayetta, a brother-in-law: Clarence Robinson of St. Louis; 4 grandchildren: Ronald Thomas, Jalen and Reagan Hall, and Tevin Higgs; 4 step-children; 8 step-grandchildren; many nephews, nieces, and cousins, and the love of his life for the last 17 years, Kelly Naomi Martin. He was preceded in death by his father, a sister, Cheryl L. Mattox Robinson, and a wife, Kerri R. Wade Mattox. Services will be held at 2:30 PM, Fri., Oct. 10, 2008, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, Topeka. Cremation will follow. Charles will lie in state after 3:00 PM, Thurs., at the funeral chapel where the family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 PM. Memorial contributions may be give to Midland Hospice Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606-2800.
