Charles J. Schmidt

Charles J. "Chuck" Schmidt, 58, Topeka, died Tues., Sept. 8, 2009, at his home. He was born Nov. 16, 1950, in Hays, the son of George A. and Wilma A. (Greiner) Schmidt. He graduated from St. Joseph's Military Academy and Fort Hays State University. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and a past commander of the Hays American Legion Post. Surviving are his former wife and long-time companion: Diana Walker of the home; a son: Greg Schmidt of Topeka; a daughter: Jennifer Baker (Randy) of Topeka; 4 grandchildren: Kaleb, Megan, Joshua, and Jacob Baker all of Topeka; his step-father: Connie Leikam of Shawnee; a brother: David Schmidt (Sherry) of Hays; 5 sisters: Christine Schmidt of Catherine, Diana Songy (John) of Lenexa, Annette Leikam of Shawnee, Arleen Leikam of Shawnee, and Roseann Rohr (Darren) of Shawnee; and many nieces and nephews. Chuck was preceded in death by a son, Jeffery C. Schmidt, on July 26, 1994. Committal of cremains will be at 11:00 AM, Mon., Sept. 14, 2009, at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, 3616 SW Sixth, Topeka. Military honors will be conducted by a Fort Riley U.S. Army Detail. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the University of Kansas Medical Center, 3901 Rainbow Blvd., Kansas City, KS 66160 or Heart of America Hospice, 3715 SW 29th St., Topeka, KS 66614. Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
