Charles J. "Pat" Marney, 79, Topeka, died Tuesday, March 12, 2003, at a Topeka hospice house.
Mr. Marney had worked for Gregg Tire and Capital Super Service. He was a custodian for Unified School District 345 at Lyman Grade School for 21 years before retiring in December 1988. He served in the Army in a Mule Pack Division during World War II and was awarded the Gilder Badge, a Bronze Service Arrowhead and Good Conduct Medal. He later served in the Air Force and was involved in the Berlin airlift, the Korean War and the Vietnam airlift before retiring in December 1964.

He was born Nov. 9, 1923, in Rossville, to George Franklin and Mary Julia Costello Marney. He attended school in Rossville and college in Florida.

Mr. Marney was a member of Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion and served on the District Executive Committee as Shawnee County commander. He was a member of Philip Billard Post No. 1650 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was past chief DeGare and Voiture 1148 40 et 8. He was a former member of the Tecumseh Kiwanis Club and the Auburn Lions Club. He was past president of the Shawnee Heights Unified School District 450 Booster Club and a member of Shawnee Heights United Methodist Church.

He married Patsy Ann Morgan on Sept. 21, 1953, in Las Cruces, N.M. She survives.

Other survivors include a daughter, Carla Eugenie Marney, Topeka; a sister, Mary Browne, Topeka; and a brother, Tom Marney, Tecumseh.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Parker-Price Mortuary. Burial will be at Half Day Cemetery in Elmont. A Fort Riley Army detail will conduct military honors at the cemetery.
