Charles Eugene Gooden, 92, passed away June 21, 2016. Known as "Chuck" to his friends and "Gene" to his family, he was born on November 18, 1923, in Paxico, Kansas.
Chuck served in the United States Navy during World War II. For many years, he was a salesman with KIB Kraft (Kansas Industries for the Blind). Chuck was known around Topeka and surrounding areas as the "broom & glove man" -- many workers at construction sites welcomed Chuck's banter, and wares of industrial-grade gloves, brooms, and miscellaneous working supplies. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, and watching sports. Chuck was an avid K-State fan.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Charles (Charlie) and Genette Gooden, and siblings Wanda Graybeal, Virginia Lett, Eldon Gooden, Lois Schultes, Orville Gooden, and Richard Gooden. He is survived by a sister, Arlene Widner. Chuck's second wife, Jo Gooden, predeceased him; he was married to Sharon Fundis for six years.
Gene married Jane (Kelly) Gooden on April 21, 1948. They had four children: Sonia Kay Howard (McLouth, KS), Calvin Eugene Gooden (Austin, TX), Cheryle Lynn Rivera (Seaside, California), and Lyle Dale Gooden (Lawrence, KS). He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Kerrick and Ryan Gooden; Dylan, Cody, and Romi Rivera; Jennifer Howard and Jessica Poe; and Casey Ann Kanicki; and nine great-grandchildren.
