Charles Dean Whitt, 80, of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, August 16, 2007, at a Topeka hospital. He was born on October 19, 1926, in Topeka, the son of Bert H. and Eva P. Warden Whitt. He attended Holliday Junior High School and Topeka High School. Dean was an Army Infantry veteran during WW II. He was employed by John Murrell Meat Packing Company and then went to work for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company for 34 years before retiring in 1985. He was involved in SCABA and Suburban youth baseball for many years as a coach. He was a member of Philip Billard Post No. 1650, V.F.W. and the United Rubber Workers Local No. 307. Dean married Lavonne Critchlow on June 21, 1947, in Topeka. She preceded him in death on April 24, 2006. He was also preceded in death by one son, Richard Dean Whitt on September 30, 1973, and one brother, Virgil. Survivors include: David Whitt of Topeka, Timothy and Barbara Whitt of Auburn, and Joyce Whitt of Topeka; five grandchildren: Travis & Jenny, Kirby, Jaime, and Jackie Whitt, and Leslie & Mike Davis; four great-grandchildren: Mathew, Samantha, and Logan Whitt and Mikayla Davis; and one sister, Phyllis Brammer of Clearwater, FL. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 20, 2007, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 N.W. Independence Ave. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Dean will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to the Oakland United Methodist Church, 801 N.E.
