Charlie Bowman passed away April 1st 2022 at the age of 92. Charlie was born November 21st 1929 in Quenemo Kansas, the son of Maude Marie Morrow and William H. Bowman. Charlie attended Quenemo GS, Crane JH and graduated from Topeka High in 1948. While in high school he joined the Kansas National Guard 174th Military Police Battalion and was activated during the Korean conflict serving from 1950 to 1953.
Charlie joined the Topeka Police Department in 1954 serving as a patrol officer, K-9 officer, detective, and a detective sergeant before retiring in 1987 with 33 years of service. Charlie and his partner Rebel were the first members of Topeka's K-9 unit in 1960. Charlie was honored to name the newest member of the unit in 2019. Rebo was a combination of Rebel and Bowman and they were featured in a Capital Journal article published March 9th 2019. Charlie and Rebel's likeness are painted on the mural along the north wall of the Law Enforcement Center. (in the doorway)
During his career with the TPD Charlie worked security for Wild Willies, Merchants National Bank and Commerce/Core First. He retired in 2015 at the age of 85.
Charlie was a lifetime member and past president of the Moose Lodge #555, life member Fraternal Order of Police, life member American Legion Post 400, member of the Topeka Scottish Rite Bodies and Arab Shrine Temple.
Charlie was married to Dona DeMore (deceased), Mary Watson (deceased) and Karen Andrews (deceased).
Services will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery & Funeral Chapel on Monday April 11th 2022 with visitation at 10 and funeral service at 11. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Quenemo Kansas at a later date. Charlie loved our country, our flag, our military, law enforcement and public service. Charlie was a remarkable man while being ordinary.
