OBITUARY: Carl Vincent Garner
Carl Vincent Garner, 83, Topeka, died Sunday, April 30, 2006, at Midland Hospice House. He was born Aug. 3, 1922, at McLouth, the son of Robert D. and Elsie M. (Martin) Garner.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Army for 5 years. He worked at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of Goodyear Post # 2187, V.F.W.; Topeka North Post # 400 of the American Legion; and Moose Lodge # 555.
He was married to Helen E. McGrew on June 1, 1959, at Auburn, NE. She survives. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Carl Ray Garner; his parents; and 2 brothers: Melvin and Robert.
Survivors include his wife, Helen, of the home; 2 daughters: Brenda Lyden and her husband, Brad Lyden, and Carla Turkin and her campanion, Truman Collins, all of Topeka; an ex-son-in-law and very good friend: Rick Turkin of Topeka; a brother: Arnold Glenn Garner of Portland, OR; 4 grandchildren: Ryan Smith, Stacy Smith-Ledford, Jayme Vincent Turkin, and Damon Turkin; and 4 great-grandchildren: Katie Smith, Hailey Ledford, Trenton Vincent Turkin, and Cheyenne Turkin.
Committal services will be at 2:00 p.m., Thurs., May 4, 2006, at Rochester Cemetery, 1200 N.W. Menninger Road, followed by military honors conducted by a Fort Riley U.S. Army Detail. Mr. Garner will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. Wed. at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 N.W. Independence, where the family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.
