Bruce Mervin McConnell, 90, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, November 24, 2010.
He was born September 14, 1920 in Craig, CO, the son of Delbert Edward and Ida Belle (Powell) McConnell. He was a 1938 graduate of a college in Red Rock, OK and received a Bachelor's of Science Degree at Edmond Central State College in Edmond, OK in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II, from July 8, 1942 until being honorably discharged on January 13, 1946.
Mr. McConnell owned and operated the McConnell's Service Station in Topeka from 1955 until retiring in 1992. He was a member of Seaman Congregational Church since 1956. He was a member and had served as Treasurer of the North Topeka Kiwanis. He was also a volunteer for Meals On Wheels in Topeka.
Bruce married Joan Kathryn Dickinson on March 1, 1947 in Topeka. She preceded him in death on October 9, 2005. Other survivors include a son Richard Lee McConnell, Topeka; a granddaughter Kristine McConnell. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Daniel Bruce McConnell in 2000 and two sisters.
Funeral ceremonies will be 1 p.m., Monday, November 29, 2010 at the Seaman Congregational Church. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Topeka. Mr. McConnell will lie in state after 1 p.m., Sunday at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Seaman Congregational Church, 2036 NW Taylor, Topeka, KS 66608 or to Meals On Wheels, 5724 SW Huntoon Street, Topeka, KS 66604.
