Betty Lou Hill Bowman

Betty Lou Hill Bowman, 89, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Midland Hospice House. She was born December 13, 1923 in Topeka, the daughter of Frank W. and Blanche Scott Hill, Sr.

She attended Topeka schools and graduated in 1943 from Topeka High. She had worked at the Santa Fe Offices and Topeka State Bank.

Betty married Clayton H. Bowman from Topeka in 1943 and had been married 60 years until his death in 2004. During their marriage, they had lived in Topeka, Waco, TX and for 22 years in Wichita before returning to Topeka in 1974 and retiring in the city where they both grew up. Mom always wanted to be back in her hometown where her mother, sisters and their families and friends were.

Betty loved being an artist and taught lessons in her Wichita home and took lessons while in Topeka from several art instructors. Her favorite media was watercolor, including barns and landscapes especially of the Flint Hills. Her portraits in watercolor, pencil and charcoal were her passion. She received many awards and ribbons on her artwork. She belonged to Artists Association and the Topeka Art Guild. She was a Campfire Girls Leader, PTA Secretary and a Block Mother.

Survivors include her daughters, Anne (Bob) Longwell of Hagerstown, MD, Dana (Larry) Hahn of Topeka and Jeri (Mike) Dennis of Grand Prairie, TX, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two sisters, Margaret Hill Segebrecht, Leawood, KS and Joan Hill Guy Anderson, Topeka and many special nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles Hill and Frank Hill, Jr. and her sister, Jean Hill Barger Jones.

Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Parker Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave. Graveside committal services will follow at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS.

Betty will lie in state from 3:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Topeka Art Guild, 5331 SW 22nd Pl., Topeka, KS 66614 or Midland Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606.
