Bette Jane Gies from Tecumseh, Kansas passed away on August 17, 2018. Bette was born on July 26th, 1926 the daughter of Norman and Mayme Burrell. Bette graduated from Highland Park High School the class of 1944 and Clark Business College. During the second World War Bette worked at the VA. During her career she also worked for Senator Lauderback in the Kansas Senate. Bette retired from Topeka Public School District in 1988. She was a Master Gardener and judged at the Shawnee County 4H Fair.
Bette married Jack Gies on August 30, 1946. He preceded her in death on November 26th, 2006. That marriage produced two sons: Jack Gies, Jr. and Martin Gies.
Bette was a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church and inductee in the Highland Park Alumni Hall of Fame.
She is survived by her sons Jack B. Gies (Claudia), Martin Gies (Pam), granddaughter Michele L. Tiedeman (Cory) and grandson Jacob T. Gies (Sarah), five great-grandchildren Elena Gies, Mabel Gies, Henry Tiedeman, twins, Alex and Gavin Tiedeman.
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Norman L. Burrell, Margaret Jones, James M. Burrell and Leonard M. Burrell.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 24, 2018 at Parker-Price Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Bette will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and the family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Highland Park Alumni Scholarship Fund.
