Bennie Lee Williams, Sr., 84, Topeka, passed away on Monday, July 11, 2006 at a local hospital.
Bennie was born October 10, 1921 in Mount Andrew, AL., the son of Floyd Williams and Katie Bracy. He was raised by his mother and step-father, Clarence Bracy.
Bennie served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, retiring December 1, 1969 as a Chief Petty Officer. He later worked for the U.S. Post Office and retired in 1987. He retired from Sears in 1996.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and president of the laymen and male chorus, along with working in various organizations within the church.
Bennie married Grace Joanna Smith on October 16, 1944 in Topeka. She survives of the home. Other survivors include their children; Bennie L. Williams, Jr., Los Angeles, CA., Richard L. Williams and wife, DeAngelis, Joanna Tyree and husband, Thomas, Shirley Reed, Robert Williams, and Betty Neal, all of Topeka; 24 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; a brother, Ronald Bracy, Tucson, AZ.; and sisters, Surella Perry, Detroit, MI., Valeda Dupree, Raleigh, NC. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 17, 2006 at Calvary Baptist Church. Mr. Williams will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Parker Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence, after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday and family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
