Benjamin M. Slater, 81, Topeka, died Saturday, June 18, 2005 at Brewster Place. He was born January 20, 1924 in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Melvin and Rose Casler Slater.
Benjamin graduated from Seaman High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 37 years.
He was a member of Kansas Avenue United Methodist Church, Rubber Workers Local 307, and he volunteered at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center. Benjamin was an avid bowler, and enjoyed gardening.
He was preceded in death by a son, Steven Slater and a daughter, Cathy Martin.
He is survived by a daughter, Vickie Carver, Topeka, three sons, M. Michael Slater, Mission, KS; Bill Slater, Mayetta, KS; Robert Slater, Topeka; two sisters, Melba File, Topeka, Alberta Piersch, Las Vegas, NV; eight grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel in North Topeka. Interment will be in Rochester Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by a funeral detail from Ft. Riley.
Mr. Slater will lie in state after 3:00 p.m., Monday, June 20, 2005 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel where the family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
