Avis N. Hahn

Avis Nadine Hahn, 90, of Lakin, Kansas, formerly of Topeka, died on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at the High Plains Retirement Village, Lakin, Kansas. Avis and her husband, Creed, were residents of Topeka, Kansas for over 50 years. She was born January 31, 1922, in Oneida, Kansas to Clarence and Margaret Malloy Denton.

Avis married Creed B. Hahn on May 31, 1947 in Alexandria, Virginia. He preceded her in death on February 28, 2006.

Avis worked as an inspector in the Carnegie Steel Mills in Chicago, Illinois during WWII. In Topeka, she was formerly employed in the Bureau of Vital Statistics for the State of Kansas, and before she retired, she worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas in the claims department.

Survivors include daughters: Gayle Wells (and her husband, Max M. Wells, MD), Austin, Texas; Sharon Neal, Garden City, Kansas.

Seven grandchildren: Kathryn (Keith) George, MD, Summit, New Jersey; Andrea (Ryan) Ardery, Satanta, Kansas; Michael Wells, MD, Columbus, Ohio; Brooke (Travis) Jantz, Copeland, Kansas; Megan (Brady) Garren, Tonganoxie, Kansas; Molly Wells, Bogota, Colombia; Joseph Neal, Plains, Kansas.

Eleven great-grandchildren: Zander, Hayes, and Harper George; Race, Jenera, and Jade Ardery; Emma, Carter, and Madelyn Jantz; Jack and Jordi Garren.

Avis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Creed, 2 sisters and 1 brother.

Special thanks goes to the nurses and staff at the High Plains Retirement Village, Lakin, Kansas for their care and support of Avis during the last several years of her life. They have been a blessing to the family and to Avis in her struggle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, June 1, 2012 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Funeral Home, 245 Northwest Independence Avenue, Topeka, Kansas. Interment will be in West Lawn Memorial Gardens. Avis will lie in state after 3:00 p.m., Thursday at the funeral chapel where the family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 4125 SW Gage Center Drive, Topeka, KS 66604.
