Avis N. Downing, 91, of Topeka, passed away on August 11, 2015.
She was born on October 17, 1923 in Woodbine, Kansas the daughter of Elmer and Susan (Bock) Atkinson.
Avis worked as a salesperson for Sears Department Store in Topeka retiring after 22 years of service.
She was a member former member of the Oakland Christian Church.
Avis married Morris R. Downing on April 2, 1945 in Kansas City, Kansas. He preceded her in death on July 8, 2002. Survivors include two sons, Robert R. Downing and Richard W. Downing both of Topeka, KS; and five grandchildren, Susan (Martin) Torrez, Eric (Alona) Kozak, Dr. Nicki (Brandon) Smith, Julia Wechsler and Sarah (Josh) Long; six great-grandchildren; and ten great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Downing on July 11, 2013 and daughter-in-law, Cindy Downing.
Avis loved to spend time with her family especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed participating in demolition derbies, winning her first one. She loved to go to dirt track races and watching her son race. One of her highlights in her later years was going to Olive Garden with her granddaughter, Tammy Blancas.
A funeral ceremony will be 10 a.m., Monday, August 17, 2015 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Gardens, Topeka. Avis will lie in state from 1-7 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 2-3:30 p.m.
