OBITUARY: Mrs. Avanel McLucas Barnes
Mrs. Avanel McLucas Barnes, 93, of Meriden died Sunday, May 15, 2005. She was born July 14, 1911 at Meriden the daughter of Earl L. and Edith Fraser McLucas. She grew up in the Meriden Community and graduated from Meriden Rural High School in 1929. She attended Strickler's Business College in Topeka.
Mrs. Barnes was a Secretary. She worked for The Santa Fe Railway Company, The Central National Bank and Trust Company, The Standard Life Insurance Company and The Columbian Title and Trust Company.
She first joined the United Methodist Church while in High School in Meriden. She was a member of The Grantville United Methodist Church where belonged to the United Methodist Women and taught Sunday School Classes. She was also a member of the XYZ Senior Group.
She married Clarence L. Barnes, September 14, 1935; he died Feb. 15, 1993. She was also preceded in death by a son, Roy L.Barnes, on Aug. 4, 2000.
Survivors include a daughter, Kay E. Dittmer of Topeka; 3 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, May 19, 2005 at the Grantville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Grantville Cemetery. Mrs. Barnes will lie in state from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 N.W. Independence, North Topeka.
