Arthur Carter "Art" Toomay, 82, Topeka, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2005 at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center. He was born August 18, 1922 in Caldwell County, Missouri the son of James Carter and Docia Gill Toomay.
He attended school in N.W. Missouri; he lived in California for a period of time before joining the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. Arthur served as a flight engineer until 1945. He lived in Kansas City, MO before moving to Topeka in 1955. Mr. Toomay worked for Pacific Intermountain Express Truck Line for 30 years where he was a terminal manager. He later worked for Dillon's Food Stores for 10 years.
Mr. Toomay was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as usher. He was a Past Master of Golden Rule Lodge #90, A.F. & A.M.; Helena Chapter #210 O.E.S. Topeka Square and Compass; and Combat Air Museum.
He married Gladys Mansfield in June of 1949 in Kansas City, MO. She died March 30, 1984. Arthur was also preceded in death by two daughters, Faye Yeaman and Barbara Berg.
Survivors include, three sons: James C. Toomay, Topeka; Seth P. Toomay, Topeka; Shane D. Toomay, Prattville, Alabama; one daughter: June Lowdermilk, Morgantown, NC; brother: Howard Toomay, DeSota, KS; two sisters, Wanda Nelson, Kansas City, MO; Ellen Kelley, Richmond, MO; 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel. Golden Rule Lodge #90 A.F. & A.M. will conduct services at Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Toomay will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. Monday, May 2, 2005 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel 245 N.W. Independence Ave. where the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
