OBITUARY: Alvin Dee Merz
Alvin Dee Merz, 71, Meriden, died Thurs., Dec. 13, 2012. He was born July 1, 1941, in Rulo, NE, the son of Floyd H. and Helen J. (Henry) Merz. He was raised in Horton and had served in the U.S. Navy. Alvin had worked for Steel Fixture Mfg.; retired from Frito-Lay; and most recently Lowe's. He was a member of the V.F.W.
He was a self-less man who went out of his way to help anyone. He was a loving father, husband, friend, teacher, and neighbor. His hobbies included tinkering, cooking, gardening, fishing, hunting, camping, and bee keeping.
Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Jeanie Merz, of the home; sons: Alvin Dee Merz II (Beth), Travis Merz, Matthew Merz (Megan), and Michael Merz; sisters: Ida Smith (Tom) and Glenda Rogers (Larry Jerome); grandchildren: Ethan, Colton, and Lucy; and numerous nieces and nephews. Surviving also are his pet companions: Nick, B.J., Princess, Sam, and Honey. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Floyd Junior Merz, Evelyn Gore, Charles Merz, and Wayne Merz.
Memorial services will be at 11:00 AM, Sat., Dec. 15, 2012, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka. The family will recieve friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Friday at the funeral chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alvin Dee Merz Memorial Fund, 808 N. Iowa, Olathe, KS 66061.
