Dorothy R Shutts

Dorothy R. Shutts, 90, of Topeka passed away on April 7, 2016. She was born Christmas Eve, December 24, 1925 at Iola, Kansas the daughter of Charles and Mattie Evers Longstaff. She was raised in the Topeka area and lived here the rest of her life. She raised her children, being very involved with their school by serving as room mother and on the PTA at Grant Elementary School in North Topeka. She was also a longtime crossing guard on Topeka Boulevard near Grant School. She was a McNess Product Saleswomen for many years. Dorothy was a polling volunteer at election sites in North Topeka. She and her children attended Eastside Baptist Church for many years and reaffirmed her faith by being re-baptized within the past year. She enjoyed feeding birds and all sorts of backyard critters who came to her feeders. She also enjoyed taking afternoon rides in the car, and traveling when she could.
She was married to Arthur Shutts, Sr. on May 26, 1945 at Topeka. They later divorced. Arthur preceded her in 1996. She later had a companion Harold Goode who also preceded her in death in 1994.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her children, Ron Kerley, Alice Carroll and Ronnie Shutts; and all five of her brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her children; Joann Walthall (Leonard) of Grove, OK, Charles Shutts (Linda) of Lusk, Wyoming, Arthur “Buster” Shutts, Jr., Sharon Avers of Topeka, Donna Berges of Topeka and Dennis Shutts (Kathy) of McLouth, Kansas; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Nan Kerley; and Harold’s daughter, Donna Goode, of Hutchinson.
She will lie in state from 11-5 on Wednesday, April 13th at Davidson’s Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 11-1 on Thursday, April 14th at Davidson Funeral Home. Following the visitation, graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm at Topeka Cemetery Garden Chapel.
