William “Bill” J. Spotswood, age 91 of Topeka passed away Friday, March 18, 2016 at the Autumn Home Plus in Topeka. Bill was born June 22, 1924 in St. Louis County, Missouri and was raised in Mexico, MO by William Edward and Sarah Byars. Bill graduated from Mexico High School and then served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Italy during WWII. After being honorably discharged he attended and graduated from the University of Missouri. Bill then attended and graduated from the University of Chicago Theological Seminary. Bill married Catherine Love. Bill served as a minister in: Ladonia, MO; Fairfield, NB; Hebron, NB; and Cameron, MO. Bill left the ministry and went to work for the State of Missouri as a social worker, case worker, and supervisor for the Bureau for the Blind. Bill married Frances M. Edwards October 13, 1967 in Springfield, MO. He retired from the state and then went back into the ministry in Flat River, MO. Bill was also a published author.
Bill is survived by his wife Frances Spotswood of Topeka; three sons, Randy Spotswood of Columbia, MO, Scott (Cynthia) Edwards of Topeka and Eddie (Gayle) Wayne Edwards of Houston, TX; daughter, Mary Jo (Paul) Summitt of Columbia, MO; a brother, Robert E. (Shirley) Spotswood of Ocala, FL.; a sister, Diana Sayrs of Williams Bay, WI.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and a great great grandson. Bill liked to fish, loved chocolate and cashews and Royals baseball. He will be missed by all of his family.
A celebration of life will be Saturday, March 26, 2016 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made at davidsonfuneral.com. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Hospice in the care of Davidson Funeral Home.
