Lyman Bruce Selby

Lyman Bruce Selby, 92, of Topeka passed away on Thursday evening, June 25th at McCrite Plaza. Lyman was born August 11, 1922 at Bushong, Kansas, the last of nine children born to Raymond Frederick and Clara Eva Bierman Selby. He went to Mount Pleasant Grade School near their home. He spent his early years helping his mother care for his ill father and working their 495 acre farm. Since he had five brothers in service, he was left to help out on the farm. He raised sheep too. He was mentioned in the Sheep in Kansas Book printed by the Kansas State Board of Agriculture in 1942. Later he worked for the Ed Grunderman Construction Company for two years after he moved to Eskridge with his parents and brothers Fred and Willard. He worked on the Bradford Bridge and the water systems in Eskridge and Paxico.
He married Darlene Eva Wetzel on May 8, 1949 in Topeka. To this union two sons were born, Ronald Bruce Selby and his wife, Lucita and Larry Lee Selby and his wife, Lauri.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Darlene; sons, Ronald and Larry Selby; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Lyman was chairman of Boy Scout Troop #1 in Topeka for 10 years and had the Order of the Arrow. He was a member of Central Church of Christ in Topeka. He worked at Whelan’s in several different capacities for many years after moving to Topeka.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at 11:00 am at Central Church of Christ, 1250 SW College in Topeka. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 am Tuesday morning prior to the funeral service. He will lie in state Monday from noon -5:00 p.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at the Harveyville Cemetery at 2:00 pm Tuesday afternoon. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Hospice and sent in care fo the Davidson Funeral Home.
