Eugenia "Jean" Hayes

Eugenia “Jean” M. Hayes, 84, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2015. She was born January 3, 1931 at Haddam, Kansas the daughter of Roger and Mary Nault Howley. Jean graduated from Clifton High School in 1948, and later from nurses training at St. Joseph-Concordia. She was a registered nurse for 28 years at St. Frances Hospital. She was a member of Mother Teresa Catholic Church in Topeka. Jean loved to travel. She went on trips with her daughter Marilyn to Ireland, Paris, Alaska, New York and L.A. She enjoyed baking. Jean had a love for animals, probably the product of growing up on a farm in Washington County. She loved to read, play bingo, do crosswords and solitaire. And she would occasionally enjoy a single “very cold” Bud Light in a frosted glass.
On December 15, 1952 she married John Lee Hayes at Clay Center.
Survivors include her husband John Lee Hayes of Topeka; her children, Mary Kay Patrick (Terry) of Harveyville, Marilyn O’Connell of Napa, CA, Michael Hayes (Jane) of Wichita and John Hayes (Megan) of Topeka; a sister, Elizabeth Kelley of Manhattan; and nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; and a daughter, Donna “Patty” Hayes.
A rosary will be recited starting at 10:00 am Wednesday morning prior to the funeral mass which will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Mother Teresa Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Topeka. Memorial contributions may be made to Loving Hearts Training Center, in care of Davidson Funeral Home.
