Edward Elmer “Skeet” Nelson passed away Thursday, December 25, 2014. He was born July 7, 1920, in Topeka, the son of Charles O. Nelson Sr. and Mary M. Schwartz Nelson. After attending Topeka Capitol Catholic High School, Skeet enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was stationed in England as a teletype operator. After WW II, he worked at Nonken Upholstery and with Manual Vargas on N. Kansas Avenue before going into the upholstery business for himself. In the 1950s he re-upholstered all the seats in the Municipal Auditorium. Anyone who knew Skeet, knew of his love for the game of baseball. This interest started with the Topeka Owls (renamed the Topeka Reds), and this led him to becoming a life-long fan of the Boston Red Sox. Skeet also coached in the Cosmopolitan Baseball League. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards. He lived in Topeka most of his life except for a few years in California. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: Virginia Kistler, Charles O. Nelson, Jr., Anne Rudolph, David Nelson and Teresa Hertlein. Uncle Skeet is survived by many nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their thanks to Meals on Wheels and to the Homestead of Auburn. Memorial contributions are suggested to Helping Hands Humane Society.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at 11 a. m.
