Alfred "Al" Schimmel

Alfred “Al” Schimmel, age 77, of Topeka passed away Thursday, November 20, 2014 in Topeka. Al was born May 2, 1937 in Lawrence the son of Ralph Schimmel and Doris McMinn Schimmel. Al was raised by Lewis and Doris Leonard, growing up in North Topeka and graduating from Seaman High School in 1955. Al served in the U.S. Army National Guard with the #778 transportation unit. Al worked for Armco Piping (currently Contact Piping) as a welder in Topeka. Al was a member of the East Topeka Neighborhood Improvement Association where he lead the tool library. Al was also volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Al enjoyed gardening and helping neighbors by mowing yards. Al also loved animals and had a special fondness for dogs, especially Zena.
Al was preceded in death by a half sister, Myrna White.
Al is survived by his wife Judy (Bass) Schimmel of Topeka; two daughters, Lore Huggins of Topeka and Cheri Solomon of South Carolina, a step daughter, Holly Rivera of Topeka; a brother, Art Schimmel of Topeka; a half brother, Dennis Schimmel of Maple Hill; a half sister, Marcel Bayless of Lecompton; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home. He will lie in state Monday from 1:00 – 8:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Richland.
