Barbara L. Cox, 48, of Topeka passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2014. She was born March 28, 1966 in Topeka the daughter of Robert and Shirley Shimeall Mahner. She attended grade school in Highland Park and graduated from Highland Park High School in 1984. After graduating she attended Baptist Bible College at Springfield, MO. She married Darrell Cox on October 3, 1987 at Eastside Baptist Church. She worked at the YWCA’s after school program for several years before opening her own daycare. She operated it for nine years before joining with her niece and they continued to operate the daycare together. Barbara was a member of the East Side Baptist Church, involved in many of the churches programs such as the junior department, nursery and AWANA. She also loved to read and sew.
Survivors include her husband, Darrell Cox of Topeka; children, Briana Lynn Cox, Kaila Marie Cox, Jessica Grace Cox and Dalton Alan Cox all of Topeka a grandchild, Ashton Wieland; her siblings, Jim Mahner and wife Joanie of Topeka, Ken Mahner and wife Ruth of Hoyt, Brenda Combes and Husband Terry of Overbrook and Jerry Mahner and wife Sandy in Alabama; her parents, Robert Mahner in South Carolina, Shirley Jackson and her husband Jerry of Topeka; brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard Cox, Linda Marsh, Cathy Ottens and Carolyn LaValley all of Topeka and Linda Cox in Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.
Barbara was preceded in death by two of her brothers-in-law, Larry and Kevin Cox.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Eastside Baptist Church. Burial will be held at Rochester Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 pm on Sunday afternoon at the church. Mrs. Cox will lie in state on Monday from 11-5 at Davidson Funeral Home.
