Edna Mae Nevins, 90, Topeka, passed away on March 3, 2014 at Aldersgate Village Nursing Home. She was born March 24, 1923 in Elmont, Kansas, the daughter of Chester and Grace Lowe Jackson. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1941 and Strickler’s Topeka Business College. During High School Edna Mae worked at Kresge’s 5 & 10 store. She loved her job with the Supply Depot. She also worked for Kansas Farmers Union, retired from Mize Houser Mehlinger & Kimes Accounting Firm, Walter L. Cobler Chartered Accounting Firm, and retired from the Kansas State Revenue Department in her middle 80’s. Edna Mae enjoyed canning, gardening, baking, sewing, crocheting blankets, embroidering, making quilts, and most of all growing her roses, which she learned to due from her mother, Grace. She was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church, where she helped with the funeral dinners and bean suppers. Edna Mae was a active member of the United Methodist Women’s Taylor Circle. She battled with Breast Cancer at the age of 86 and won that battle.
Edna Mae Jackson first married Ralph J. Hefner, deceased, they divorced, later in life she twice married John W. Nevins, now divorced.
She is preceded in death by both parents, a sister-law, Mary A. Jackson, her older brother, Harold C. Jackson and a granddaughter, Sandra K. Miller.
Edna Mae is survived by a daughter, Teresa M. ( Johnny Jackson ) Miller; a son, Michael ( Marsha ) J. Hefner; a brother, Dale ( Helen ) Jackson, Topeka, two sisters, Mary ( Leonard ) Freeman, Topeka, Dorothy ( Lyle ) Ely, Okla., five grandchildren, Michael ( Tara ) Miller, Kristen ( Trip ) Stadelman, Amy ( Eric ) Wildman, Tara Hefner and Tracey Hefner; twelve great grandchildren, Benjamin Miller, Laura ( Jeremy Nickelson ) Miller, Alaina, Adian, Austin, Ava, and Ashton Miller of Topeka, Jacob, Ethan and Addison Wildman of Memphis, Tennessee, Stella, and Sophie Stadelman of Memphis, Tennessee. One great great granddaughter, Jessia Nickelson of Topeka. Seven loving furry family members, Whitey, Cookie, Hershey, Heidi, Trixie, Gizmo and Lucy.
Funeral services will be Friday, March 7, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home. She will lie in state Thursday from noon – 8:00 p.m. with visitation from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. also at the Davidson Funeral Home. Interment will be at the Half Day Cemetery.
