Melvin Thompson, age 75, of Ava, Missouri, formerly of Topeka passed away at his home in Ava Friday, November 22, 2013. He was born November 9, 1938 in Topeka the son of Roy C. Thompson and Juanita M. Huntsman Thompson. Melvin grew up in Topeka, moving to Ava, Missouri 43 years ago. He married Carolyn Wagner November 23, 1960 in Topeka. Melvin worked as a truck driver but most of his life and time was spent as a farmer in the Ava area. Melvin enjoyed working with his hands building most things around him, including his own home. His real love was to work with iron. He enjoyed working with quarter horses and was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association. Melvin and Carolyn attended the Friendship Freewill Baptist Church near Ava. Melvin enjoyed country music. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Wagner) Thompson; a son, Dale Thompson of Rifle, Colorado; a sister, Jo Anne Thompson Heckard; 4 grandsons, Austin McNeil, Melvin Aaron Thompson II, Cody Lane Thompson and Jake Alan Thompson and 1 great grandson, Noah McNeil.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka. He will lie in state Monday from noon – 8:00 p.m. with visitation from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. all at the Davidson Funeral Home. Interment will be at the Half Day Cemetery in Elmont. Memorial contributions may be made to either Friendship Freewill Baptist Church of Ava or the American Cancer Society. Online condolences can be made at davidsonfuneral.com.
