Donald Raub Kirkwood was born May 18, 1918 in the Elmont Community, the son of Ira and Grace (Mitchell) Kirkwood.
He attended Seaman High School and graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1936. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Donald played professional baseball for the Kernels in Mitchell, South Dakota and semi-pro for the Topeka Decker Oilers. He was a substitute rural mail carrier for several years while pursuing his lifetime love of farming.
On October 21, 1942, he was united in marriage to Helen (Fairy) Frey in Topeka. They recently celebrated 71 years of marriage. She survives.
Also surviving are their three sons; Richard Arlen (Darlene), Robert Merwin (Barbara) and Lloyd Douglas (Lois), eight grandchildren; Roger (Melissa), Sally Brown (Virgil), Cindy Kavan (Joel), Paul and James, Raub (Kristin), Austin, and Laramie, and seven great-grandchildren; Nathan, Ethan, Noah and Zoe Kavan, Cole and Claire Brown and Rylin. He is also survived by his sister Mildred Lawton and brother Harry Dean.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bethel Community Church 6944 NW Landon Road, Topeka, KS 66618. Burial will follow at Prairie Home Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. Monday evening at Bethel Community Church.
