Lloyd Hitchens, 93, of Topeka passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at his home. Lloyd was one of nine children born to William and Aetna (McPheeters) Hitchens, born February 2, 1920 at Burlington, Kansas. He lived in Arkansas and Burlington as a youngster, going to school in Burlington. He enlisted in the United States Army and served with the 1st Calvary Division in New Guinea and the Philippine’s during World War II. He was awarded several medals including a pair of bronze stars. Lloyd returned to Kansas and married Helen M. Philipi on January 18, 1943 in Topeka. Helen just passed away this summer in August. He worked for 18 years at Dale Sharp before retiring. He was a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W., Moose Lodge and several camping clubs. Lloyd loved his family, his pets and loved to fish, anywhere. He will always be remembered and always missed.
Lloyd is survived by his daughter, Gilda Singleton and husband Allen of Topeka; grandchildren, Blake Singleton and Brandon Singleton of Berryton and Bailey Singleton of Topeka; sister, Phyliss Kender of Antioch, CA.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday morning September 14th at Davidson Funeral Home. Interment will be in Lynn Creek Cemetery north of Berryton. Mr. Hitchens will lie in state at Davidson’s from 1-9 pm on Thursday, Sept. 12th, where the family will receive friends from 6-8 pm.
