James “Jim” Howard Cann Sr., 70 of Topeka passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2013. Jim was born on April 5, 1943 in Topeka to the son of William and Georgia “Sally” Cann. He served in the army in the late 60’s and did a tour in Vietnam. Jim worked at Topeka Auto Salvage until 1994 and LKQ as an automotive dismantler until 2005 when he retired. He was a member of Flint Hills Touring A’s since 2005. He was restoring a 1930 Model A Coupe. He was an avid fisherman and was a NASCAR fan.
Survivors include: children Timothy Cann (Kennewick, WA), Lisa (Bill) Appleford (Topeka), James H. Cann II (Topeka), and Nichole Cann (Topeka); an ex-wife Mary Cann (Topeka); grandchildren Michelle (Jon) Crumpler (Topeka) , Shelby Appleford (Topeka), and Christina Appleford (Topeka); great grandchildren Carly Crumpler, and Alanna Appleford Livermore both from Topeka; siblings Gladys Ohandlen (Topeka), Larry Cann (Pomona), Johanna Mae (Tacoma, WA), Kathy Gragg (Omaha, NE) and nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents William and Georgia “Sally” Cann, two brothers Frank Green and William “Billy” John Cann Jr. and a great grandson Matthew Appleford.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 am Friday August 9, 2013 at Memorial Park. Mr. Cann will lie in state from 1-8 pm on Thursday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6-8 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association.
