Helen M. Hitchens, 89, of Topeka passed away on Monday, August 5, 2013 at her home. She was born October 3, 1923 in Arrington, Kansas the daughter of Charles and Vina Purcel Philipi. Helen was raised in Atchison County and graduated from Effingham High School in 1941. Mrs. Hitchens worked for 30 years at the Santa Fe offices in Topeka before retiring.
On January 18, 1943 she was married to Lloyd Hitchens in Topeka. Lloyd survives at their home.
Other survivors include her daughter, Gilda Singleton and her husband Allen of Topeka; and three grandchildren, Blake Singleton of Berryton, Brandon Singleton and Bailey Singleton of Topeka.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Alfred Wayne Philipi and Glen Philipi and a sister, Wavel Pace.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Thursday, Aug. 8th at Davidson Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Lynn Creek Cemetery. Mrs. Hitchens will lie in state from 1-9 on Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6-8 pm.
