Edward George Porubsky

Edward G. Porubsky, age 89, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2013 in Topeka. Eddie was born August 10, 1923 in Topeka the son of Joseph and Mary Kisner Porubsky. Eddie grew up in North Topeka’s “Little Russia”, attending St. Jospeh’s school and Capitol Catholic High School. His siblings were brothers Walt and Joe Jr., and sisters were Lucille and Anna. Eddie served during W.W. II in the Army where he was assigned to the 158th Regimental Combat Team, ”The Bushmasters”. The 158th R.C.T. fought in New Guinea and Phillipine Islands. In 1950, Eddie was called back to service during the Korean War and served as a drill instructor. He rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class. Going home after W.W.II, he met the “love of his life”, Ruth Sodomek. Her nickname was “Boots”. Bootsie and Eddie were married August 10, 1946 in Topeka. Eddie is survived by a son, Ed (Joan) Porubsky of Topeka; two daughters, Mary Jane (Gary) Gillaspie of Topeka and Carol (Hal) Gray of Topeka; grandchildren, Brad and Blake Porubsky, Scott, Brian and Erik Gillaspie; Dustin Murray, Shawn and Ashley Gray; step grandchildren, Martina, Josh and Jared Gray; great grandchildren, Rusty, Carter and Brooke Porubsky, Morgan and Haiven Gray, Elise, Nikolas, Natalia, Dalton and Kylea Gillaspie and step great grandchildren, Haley Gray, Tayte Waslar, Trinity and Jordan Brown. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Christopher Murray. Eddie was a plumber and pipefitter as a trade and was a proud member of the Local #165 and also served in various union jobs during his lifetime. Eddie was a lifetime member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post #400. Eddie and Bootsie loved fishing and traveling with their best friends Bub and Maxine Merritt. It didn’t matter what they were doing, they had a good time.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church. He will lie in state Wednesday from noon – 8:30 p.m. with visitation from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home. Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. also at the Davidson Funeral Home. Interment will be at the West Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church and sent in care of the Davidson Funeral Home.
